Naomi Dunford is scuzzy and disingenuous.
She swears like a sailor. She gets her hand stuck in wine boxes. She has a semicolon on her back. She’s so damned real that she’s almost fake. And I’ll buy pretty much anything she tries to sell me. Ever.
I’ve had about a week and a half to review her newest product, Marketing 101. Let’s dive in.
A Quick Synthesis (for the lazy or busy)
Marketing 101 is pretty much what you would expect from Naomi: a no-nonsense, practical, and very useful guide to marketing your ittybiz. The “practical” and “useful” – as she states several times in the materials – only come into play if you’re willing to listen to the audios, do the exercises and actually work on the implementation. For those who aren’t afraid of a bit of hard work, I’d rate it a strong buy.
Contents
What’s in the box?
4 audios (each about an hour in length), 1 81-page PDF e-book (79 pages of core content), and a sooper sekrit special bonus.
Audio #1 – Figuring out what makes you awesome. Talks about coming up with your USP – or why customers should buy from you and not from the other guy doing the same thing down the street. Yes, you probably know what that is and you might even have one defined – and both definitions are guaranteed to be utterly wrong.
Audio #2 – Who’s supposed to buy this stuff, anyway? Defining your target market – the type of people you want to come looking for you. Hint: “Everyone” is not a valid target market.
Audio #3 – What do I say to these people? So you have an idea of who you want to sell to, and the awesome stuff you’re selling… and no clue what to say to get people to buy. Listen and rejoice.
Audio #4 – Sneaky, sneaky tricks. If you had $1 million in the bank, you could hire people to do your marketing for you. (Or skip entrepreneurship altogether and head to the beach!) But you haven’t got $1 million. Maybe you haven’t got $1. No problem!
PDF e-book – Contains an overview of everything that was discussed in the calls, plus exercises. Business calisthenics, if you will.
Sooper Sekrit Bonus – It’s a bonus! It’s secret! And it’s super.
Price
$197. Since Naomi’s time normally goes for around $500/hour (and she’s booked for the next 3 months anyway), and here you’re getting more than 4 hours worth of her talking about marketing + a great e-book with exercises (and since the techniques in the course are designed to help you make that money back), it’s a pretty awesome deal.
The Good
Jack introducing the audios. Because it’s so damned cute.
The contents. In the audios, Naomi’s presentations are spot-on. The e-book is fantastic, with content which gets straight to the point, and exercises which help you customize the generic material for your own particular situation.
The action-oriented focus. Naomi does spend some time on theory – but the material never feels padded out or stretched too thin. There’s a lot of focus on strategy, which is where most people need help, and tactics. You’re propelled into doing the exercises – which are the best part of the course.
Hard work. (See above.)
The e-book design. Which is RED! And gorgeous.
The Less-Good (but still not bad)
Some of the QA sessions at the end of the audios. A lot of the questions are highly relevant and add depth and understanding to Naomi’s presentations. Some of the questions, however, veered off-topic. And oh lord, the digression on poledancing apparel!
Hard work. Which you’ll need to do a lot of if you want to get the full benefit from this project. One exercise in particular – the SWOT analysis – was brutal. Good brutal. Helpful brutal. But brutal.
Will you benefit?
Vastly – if you use it.
The same goes for any other information product, of course. If you’re going to stash the files somewhere on your hard drive and then wonder why you’re still not reaching the number and quality of people you want to reach, then Marketing 101 isn’t going to work out for you.
But that’s the beauty of this thing: if it wasn’t just a little hard, then you would already have gotten up and done it. Naomi understands that. She gives good reasons for doing what she’s asking you to do, and good examples of how to do it. From theory, down to strategy, down to tactics.
Marketing 101 is as real as Naomi.
